Is Jet Lag Worse Going East or West? Why Direction Changes Everything

You've probably felt it. Fly west and you're a little off for a day or two. Fly east and you're exhausted for the week. That's not in your head, and it's not about the airline or the seat. It's physiology, and once you understand it, you can tune your whole approach to the direction you're flying.

Why flying east is harder

Left to itself, your body clock doesn't run on exactly 24 hours. On average it runs a touch longer, about 24.2 hours. That means you naturally tend to drift a little later every day, which is why staying up late is easier than forcing yourself to sleep early.

Now map that onto travel:

  • Flying west means you need to delay your clock, stay up later, wake up later. That's the direction your body already wants to drift. Easier.
  • Flying east means you need to advance your clock, sleep earlier, wake earlier. That fights your natural drift. Harder.

The numbers back it up: people re-adjust at roughly 1.5 hours per day heading west, but only about an hour per day heading east. Same number of time zones, more days of misery going east.

The rule that flips with direction: light

Light is the single most powerful signal for resetting your clock, but when you get it matters, and the right timing depends on which way you flew. Get this backwards and you can actually push your clock the wrong way.

  • Flying east (need to advance): seek morning light, and avoid bright light late in the evening.
  • Flying west (need to delay): seek evening light, and go easy on early-morning light.

That's the rule most people need. If you want the reason it works, and the one situation where it backfires, read on.

What most advice skips (and why "just get sunlight" can backfire)

Whether light advances or delays your clock depends on when it hits relative to your core body temperature minimum, the coldest point of your daily cycle, which lands roughly 2 to 3 hours before your normal wake-up time. Light after that low point advances your clock; light before it delays your clock.

Here's the practical catch for big eastward trips: if you cross many time zones east and chase bright light too early, that light can land before your body's temperature minimum, and instead of advancing your clock the way you want, it delays it, making things worse. This is exactly why the generic "just get outside when you land" advice sometimes backfires.

The safe practical version: after a large eastward flight, favor light later in the local morning and through midday for the first day or two, rather than pre-dawn or very early light, and protect yourself from bright evening light. The trick for very long trips: flip the direction

For truly big crossings, beyond about 12 time zones, it's often easier to trick the problem into its shorter half. Flying Hawaii to Japan is a 19-hour shift eastward, but it's only a 5-hour shift westward. So you'd adapt as if you flew west, delaying your clock, because that's the smaller, easier move. Whenever a shift exceeds 12 hours, treating it as the opposite direction is the easier path.

Start before you leave

You don't have to wait until you land. Shifting in the right direction for a few days pre-flight means arriving already partway adjusted:

  • Before flying east: move your sleep and meals earlier by an hour or so a day for a few days, and get morning light. Research shows several days of advancing sleep with morning bright light produces real phase advances before an eastward trip.
  • Before flying west: move your sleep and meals later, and lean into evening light.
